Alleged excessive use of force in recent Kebbah violent protest, call for investigation of the Liberia National Police to regain public trust

Citizens Bureau for Development and Productivity / Liberia National Police

Monrovia, Liberia - July 11, 2018 - To promote Police-citizen relationship, we would like to caution members of the Liberia National Police (LNP) against the use of excessive force to avoid situations which undermine people’s trust and confidence within the institution.

According to our analysis given interaction with community members about the violence which took place on 27th June 2018 in Kebbah, Gardnersville, Montserrado County, contradicts the police account of not firing live bullets.

The fact that a lady named Helena Namely sustained injury on the neck, with testament from eyewitnesses that live bullets were been fired, puts the Police account of the story as unbelievable from the perspective of the general public, and this has the propensity to undermine any sense of public trust and confidence within the LNP.

Against this backdrop, we’re calling upon the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) to investigate the claims and counter claims consistent with its statutory mandate to defend and protect the human rights of the people of Liberia, so as to unravel what happened and bring up front the actuality. This is so to guarantee the public trust in the government ability to protect its citizens and others within its borders during challenging and tempting times.

Best,
