Alarm over the printing of excess ballot papers for presidential elections in Liberia

*Citizens Bureau for Development and Productivity / Liberia National Police

Press Release (Issued in Monrovia as of September 30, 2017)

It has become mandatory on the part of Civil Society Organizations, such as the Citizens Bureau for Development and Productivity (CIBDAP) who engages in Community Justice Initiatives through mediation and creating public awareness against electoral violence, hoping for peaceful 2017 elections in Liberia, but the National Elections Commission (NEC) had cast doubt and fear on the minds of the public in that it has printed excess ballot papers in the tone of 40% of the total eligible voters in the country.

As opposed to 2.1 million eligible voters, considering risk analysis, printing 3,053,435ballot papers by the NEC is alarming. This has created speculation which is critical to the expectation of the transparent and credible election we hope to see being conducted; because we stand to be corrected we have not seen this quantity of excess being printed anywhere attributable to replacing spoil ballot against unforeseen circumstances that may occur.

Against this background the Citizen Bureau is calling for accountability of the total ballot printed, including the excess, couple up with any spoil one for review by a verification committee.
