With the support of the Accountability Lab, the Citizen’s Bureau and its sister mediation organization, the West Point Health and Sanitation organization, are carrying on a community justice project to promote access to justice in densely populated urban slum communities in Monrovia and its suburbs. The initiative began in West Point and was later expanded to Logan Town with the support of the Citizen’s Bureau.
Community satisfaction with these programs has been tremendous, with community members actively seeking out mediation services and not a single instance of recidivism among resolved cases.
The Citizen’s Bureau acknowledges the significance of this award and its recognition of or innovative solutions to resolving conflicts in Liberia. This award comes at a particularly precipitous times as the United Nations Mission in Liberia prepares to hand over full security responsibilities to the government.
The Citizen’s Bureau calls on all Liberians to see this award received by the Accountability Lab, the world’s first grassroots justice award, as a indicator of hope for peace and promotion of good neighborliness among our community dwellers, and that therefore, it is an award for all Liberians.
About the Citizen’s Bureau
The Citizens Bureau for Development and Productivity is an independent, non-profit peace-building and development organization which has its roots in the restructuring and reform of the New Liberian National Police (the Citizens Bureau has no formal connection to the Liberian National Police). It works toward the eradication of poverty in Liberia and the promotion of community policing through community justice initiatives that seek to address local disputes and which encourages partnership with national and international civil society organizations.
