An idea contributing to President George Weah Pro-Poor agenda for Liberia

Citizen Bureau for Development and productivity/ Liberia National Police

An idea for a pro-poor agenda:

Being developed from the restructured of the Liberia National Police (LNP), the Citizen Bureau for Development and Productivity (CBDP), a Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) is engaging Government of Liberia (GOL) through the LNP to acquire such authority so that misdemeanor crimes or civil disputes are subject to visible hard work through agricultural farming. For example, in civil disputes involving debt, once established by community justice team or requisite authority, with inability for the debtor to pay the borrower, the CBDP will pay the debt while the debtor pay back to the CBDP through visible hard labor growing and cultivating cocoa or other cash crops for such period which commensurate for the offense committed as prescribed by law. And, with the prospects that unskilled offenders may acquired skills that are crucial to their livelihood and sustainability.

Impact to our Criminal justice system:

As opposed to inmates languishing behind iron bars with total liability on the government and its partners as it relates to inmates feeding, costs for basic human rights, the disadvantage of not being corrected for a second chance and the avoidance of ill sentencing , this methodology will reduce the burden both on the government and its partners, as offenders will pay for all costs toward feeding and ensuring busy human rights for offenders. This is done, as offenders sentenced to visible hard work growing and cultivating cash crops will be contributing to the economic growth and development without infringement to offenders human rights while ensuring justice for the offense committed. Proceed generated will be directed toward sustaining community justice initiative and toward other social good at the community level. Once prescribed penalty is completed and skills acquired, offenders are certificated following a program qualifying them for a second chance, having being corrected, so as to meaningfully engage society as they have learned to work and earned money legitimately.
